Programs:

DWW-SBSM has diverse programs in various phases of development. These programs fall into three broad categories:

      1. Wrap Around Care
      2. Education
      3. Disaster/Emergency Relief

WRAP-AROUND-CARE:

Women's Free Shelter Clinic (WFSC)
The Women's Free Shelter Clinic is a bi-monthly free women's health clinic co-sponsored by Planned Parenthood and Transition House. Women are offered free services including medical care, birth control, mental health, drug and alcohol counseling, and rape crisis counseling. The clinic takes place the second and fourth Friday of every month from 10am to 3pm at Transition House.

Collaborative Partnerships:   Transition House, Planned Parenthood, EasyLift, Santa Barbara Rape Crisis, Direct Relief International.

Street Medicine
Volunteer-based Street Medicine Teams provide in-person treatment, referrals to other local free services, and psycho-social care to homeless and vulnerable populations in downtown Santa Barbara. These teams mobilize on foot to reach target populations with needs unmet by other local services. Medical malpractice insurance is provided to clinical members of the Street Medicine Teams, which allows them to continue their mission in meeting the medical needs of Santa Barbara's homeless and vulnerable populations.

Collaborative Partnerships:   St. Francis Foundation, St. Brigid Fellowship

EDUCATION:

Mark Stinson Memorial Austere Medicine-Medical Reserve Corp Leaders Course
The "MRC Leaders Course" is an annual interdisciplinary training held locally, created by DWW-SBSM in partnership with Santa Barbara County EMSA. This course prepares local MRC leaders for disaster response in austere conditions. This course is also used as a model for MRC development in other communities. Course instructors are experts with field experience in disaster, international and wilderness medicine. Course attendees are MRC volunteers and prospective MRC volunteers selected for their leadership ability.
Collaborative Partnerships:  Santa Barbara County MRC, Direct Relief International.
Underserved Medicine Seminar UCSB
This undergraduate, upper-division seminar has been taught annually at UCSB during winter quarter since 2008. Keeping with the DWW-SBSM mission, all instructors are volunteers. In addition to didactics, this course provides volunteer opportunities for the students in the local community. This series is a credited course (outline) for UCSB students, as well as being open to the public.
Collaborative Partnerships:  University of California, Santa Barbara

DISASTER/EMERGENCY RELIEF:

Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)
As part of the national, regional and state effort to promote volunteerism and strengthen America's emergency response capabilities, the Santa Barbara County MRC unit was established by the Santa Barbara County Emergency Medical Services Agency in 2006. Since then, the MRC has been training for and responding to incidents requiring medical response within Santa Barbara County. The mission of the Santa Barbara Medical Reserve Corps is to develop partnerships with the medical profession (active and retired) that aid in the education, training and deployment of citizen volunteers and resources in the event of a large scale local emergency. We seek to accomplish this mission by enlisting citizen volunteers to assist in the establishment of an organized pool of resources capable of being deployed to support emergency and medical management systems already in place in the event of a major emergency. DWW-SBSM provides coordination in the communication, training, fundraising/grant writing, and public outreach for the MRC. In addition to providing these support services, DWW-SBSM programs such as the Women's Free Shelter Clinic, Isla Vista Halloween Recovery Zone and Street Medicine offer unique opportunities for the MRC members to be of service on an ongoing basis. All clinical members of DWW-SBSM are encouraged to become members of the MRC.
Collaborative Partnerships:  Santa Barbara County MRC, Direct Relief International.
Isla Vista Halloween Recovery Zone and First Aid Station
A community service event held annually since 2006 on the grounds of St Athanasius Church in Isla Vista in order to assist the multi-agency effort to keep Isla Vista safe during one of the nation's largest student street parties. At the Recovery Zone, DWW-SBSM provides triage and first-aid and helps youth get home safely. Halloween in Isla Vista has been officially deemed an annual disaster Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) by our local government.
Collaborative Partnerships:  Santa Barbara County EMSA , Direct Relief International, St. Brigid Fellowship .
